Contrasto, forma e equilibrio
Watermarks
Rising water levels – evident even along the local London canals – is the theme of a series of paper pulp works, a selection of which I’m showing at the London Canal Museum. As well as signifying the water line, the title refers to the ‘watermark’ effect incorporated in each of the paper pulp works, achieved by varying the thickness of the fibre during the making process.
An installation of melting and dripping ice is also on show, where hanging paper becomes tinted through capillary action. The short video work, Sciogliere e ritrovare, can be seen on the ground floor.
I’ll be demonstrating techniques and running a paper-making workshop using edible plants on Sunday 28 July, 11:00 to 16:00 with the chance to make your own paper.
The exhibition continues until 31st July.
Ice Poetry – Sciogliere e ritrovare
Installation work Sciogliere e ritrovare at the Art on Ice event for Museums at Night, London Canal Museum, Saturday 18th May. The work features stills and film footage projected onto blocks of ice embedded with fragments of text. Audio includes poetry by Frances Presley.
Giant Carp

‘CARP’ is a sculpture consisting of 10,000 recycled plastic bags. It is currently floating in the large pond in Mile End Park (next to The Art Pavilion) alongside Regent’s Canal as part of the Regent’s Canal Festival 2012, Rubbish Art.

The aim of the work is to create something aesthetic from rubbish, as well as highlighting the massive problem of plastic bags on the envirnoment, including their negative impact on canals and waterways.
Recycled plastic milk bottles held in place underneath keep the fish afloat and solar lights and recycled cds transform the piece at night.
After knotting and sewing a few thousand bags I could smell and feel the oil and chemicals from the bags on my hands. The smell of plastic lingered for ages.

Regents Canal Festival takes place on 13th – 15th July.

Hope to see you there!
Irma Irsara works in a variety of media, but with her own distinctive style. Her recent pulp works are created, at a point where art meets craft, by layering dyed fibre pulp using handmade paper techniques, .
Having grown up among the beautifully chromatic Italian Dolomites, Irma developed a language of colour from a young age and this dialogue has remained the essence of her work.

London Canal Museum
Images from Museums at Night at the London Canal Museum last Saturday night.
There is a fine line between craft and art – I believe the ideas come first, then you find the best techniques to communicate these.
The challange with the stained glass artists books, both for myself and the viewer, is to be able to look beyond the craft techniques and the decorative elements and to see them as vehicles for my artistic ideas.

Museums at Night 2012
Each space makes the work unique and none more so than London canal Museum for the Museums at Night event.
This year I’ll be exhibitng two pulp works and 3 stained glass bookworks, including one new one, Lava. I have chosen a space near the window which will hopefully transform the pieces through a combination of the outside view, and the candle and torchlight.
For the second year running the London Canal Museum will be celebrating the Europe-wide festival, Museums at Night. The museum will be candle-lit for the evening, and up to a dozen artists will be showing a wide range of works. Come and see the museum in a totally different light – and meet the artists too!
Saturday 19 May 2012 at 12-13 New Wharf Road, London N1 9RT.
Admission £5 (£4 concessions). 1800-2300.
