Photographic documentation of my site-specific work in the Victorian ice wells at the London Canal Museum, Kings Cross in 2013. Zero Celsius was an experimental and ever-changing time-based installation using ice forms, melanix, organic material, video and lights, which reflected shifting and changing geographical boundaries as a result of climatic conditions.

I met with Amy Smith in the coffee shop at Park Theatre last week to talk about my work. Her piece which appeared in the Islington Tribune on Friday coincides with my current exhibition at Voluntary Action Islington, which runs until 11 March.

È l’inizio del tutto, quando Irma prende in prestito dalla natura un po’ di acqua, per lavorarla, trasformarla e poi restituirla. Lavorerà alacremente aspettando di scoprire il momento, quel momento in cui capirà che non potrà fare altro se non riconsegnare alla natura quel che gli appartiene.
Le mani di Irma che plasmano, fino a quando il lavoro non sembrerà un filo teso al massimo e pronto a rompersi, sarà lì che le sue mani si fermeranno e con emozione renderanno l’oggetto. Sarà poi lei, la natura a modellare l’oggetto plasmandolo con forza e perfezione, sciogliendolo lentamente fino che tornerà acqua.
Un cerchio nel cerchio, un cerchio di luce che sì illumina e espande la sua tensione fino a toccare, sfiorando e scontrandosi con il cerchio del pozzo. Il cerchio del pozzo che cerca di trattenere quel cerchio di luce fino a che è costretto a respingerlo creando cerchi nei cerchi, cerchi nei cerchi….
After the three freezers were winched down into the wells, I needed to decide how to plan the space. I had a choice between making the equipment part of the exhibition by involving the viewers in the making process or focusing attention primarily on the ice installation itself.
Some people’s experience of the piece will consist of that which they see on the webcam. To avoid the freezers dominating that experience I decided to locate them in the camera’s blind spot.
This means they can still be seen from above in the museum but not from the two main vantage points. They are part of the story without detracting from the main installation.
Practicalità e pensiero.
Looking and collecting are as important as creating.

Una danza tra comunione e comunanza, è quella che prende vita tra Irma e ciò che raccoglie mentre girovaga in mezzo alla natura. Si guarda intorno con curiosità e desiderio, comincia a raccattare materiale e poi trova un albero. Un albero rosso che sembra pronto a farsi spogliare dalle mani capaci di un’artista. Come una donna che decide di togliersi il vestito per il piacere di chi la sta guardando, quell’albero si lascia spogliare della sua corteccia con la soddisfazione e consapevolezza di diventare altro, di diventare una nuova forma, di diventare arte.
E stare lì, è come assistere a un processo di liberazione spirituale, come vedere, toccare, percepire l’alchimia dell’artista che si fonde con l’alchimia dell’albero. Irma che “libera” l’albero, avviandolo a una trasformazione fisica, che, inevitabilmente e gradualmente porterà a una trasformazione scorsa-albero d’artista. Barbara Pasculli
Guardare Irma mentre lavora, mentre “parla” con i primi blocchi di ghiaccio che ha di fronte è come immergersi nei suoi pensieri, è come sentirsi parte di quell’opera che sta creando.
Dall’idea. “L’idea è l’essenza di tutto. Specialmente del dialogo e dell’esperienza.”.
È “la creazione di forme da contemplarsi, la definizione migliore per un artista”.
It’s important for me to be able to embed lights into the frozen forms. This is a period of experimentation to see how successfully I can do this. The transparency of the material leads me to look closer at it, almost searching for an imaginary landscape inside the heart of the ice. I find ice is very similar to other materials I have used in the past like glass, mirror and pulp. When light enters the artwork it makes the edges more defined and frees the boundaries between artwork and the surrounding space.
